The announcement that SAP has acquired the U.S.-based MDM platform Reltio may be one of the most impactful data-related SAP developments in recent years. The acquisition demonstrates that master data management is no longer just about data quality and governance, but is increasingly becoming the foundation of enterprise AI.
For organizations investing in SAP Master Data Governance (MDG), this immediately raises questions:
What will be the role of SAP MDG in the future?
Will Reltio replace SAP MDG?
What does this mean for existing MDG implementations?

Why SAP Acquired Reltio
According to SAP, the acquisition is intended to make data from both SAP and non-SAP systems “AI-ready.”
That’s an important detail. SAP MDG has historically been strong in governing SAP-native data within the ERP landscape. For example:

But modern enterprise landscapes have long since ceased to consist solely of SAP systems. Companies also use, for example:

What does this mean for existing SAP MDG customers?
No changes are expected in the near term for current MDG customers. SAP has explicitly stated that Reltio will remain available as a standalone solution for the time being and that it will become part of the SAP Business Data Cloud.
But strategically, things are definitely changing.
1. The focus is shifting from governance alone to AI-ready data
Master data management is increasingly seen less as an administrative process and more as a foundation for AI.
AI agents can only make reliable decisions when:
the data is consistent,
relationships between objects are known,
context is available,
and duplicates have been resolved.
That's exactly what Reltio excels at.
2. SAP MDG projects need to adopt a broader perspective
Even today, many MDG projects still focus heavily on: “How do we obtain and maintain clean SAP data?”
The new question will likely be: “How do we build a single, trusted data context across the entire enterprise landscape?”
That calls for a broader enterprise data strategy.
3. Non-SAP integration is becoming more important
Companies with hybrid environments can benefit from Reltio’s open integration approach. In doing so, SAP implicitly acknowledges something important: the future of enterprise data no longer lies entirely within the SAP ecosystem alone.
Potential Risks and Uncertainties
At the same time, this acquisition also brings with it some uncertainties.
Analysts warn that SAP has not yet published a clear roadmap outlining the exact relationship between MDG and Reltio.
Important open-ended questions include, for example:
Will Reltio ultimately take precedence over SAP MDG?
Are certain MDG features being phased out?
What will licensing look like?
Will Reltio really remain vendor-agnostic?
How deep will the integration with SAP Business Data Cloud be?
For organizations with significant MDG investments, it is therefore advisable to keep a close eye on SAP’s roadmap over the next 12–24 months.

Whereas MDM was often viewed in the past as a supporting IT domain, it is now evolving into a central AI enabler.
SAP MDG won't disappear, but its positioning will likely change:
less of a standalone MDM platform,
more of a governance engine within a broader data architecture.
Reltio can serve as the missing link between SAP data, non-SAP data, and AI applications.
For organizations, this means that the discussion should no longer focus solely on “which tool should we use?”, but rather on:
How do we build a future-proof data foundation,
How do we organize governance,
And how do we make enterprise data truly AI-ready?
The coming years will be decisive in determining how SAP actually shapes this strategy. One thing, however, seems clear: the line between ERP, data platforms, MDM, and AI is blurring at an ever-faster pace.
